SECOND DAWN by William Donges, 1995 wdonges@falcon.lhup.edu sequal to The Darkest Hour _________________ Hello, the Vampire Lestat again, you did not really think I was dead did you, not I night's immortal child, me dead, never. It did seem that way for awhile, but did you honestly think the thrilling exploits you so recently read could be the products of an impostor... you should really have paid more attention after all I did not even start of my narative in the same way that the third person ended it... Yes I know I promised to wait till the end before I utilized the first person again but seeing as so many people were distressed by my sudden departure I decided it was neccesary to put your minds at ease before I go on, yes I am still among the immortal community, but in order to find out what happened next I have to shift back to the third tense, something that will have to wait till my next thrilling installment, suffice to say that I was gifted by as many users of the illustrious information superhighway have put it a startrek plot convinience... In regards to that I came across a recent "silly" ecploit of mine that I never wanted released to the public. I will respond to the comment that I was Mick's mindless slave all in due time, but for now as this is a specific narrative I will only say, I am only what I want to be. Lestat de Lioncourt Armand's Personal Diary: I grow weary Louis' mysterious absence and the extended absence of Lestat are disturbing to.... Armand stood distracted writing in his diary had become more and more difficult lately. The last time he kept an active journal the contents were spread around for all the world to see, and to criticize. Armand was not handling critiques very well, after all he reasoned that it was his job and his alone. :Pathetic: a voice came unbidden shattering Armand's thoughts. :As usual Armand, you have sunk to pathetic self pity: :Lestat: Armand hissed :where the hell have you been: :For once your witless postulations are on target: "What?" Armand asked, outloud. Lestat stepped in from the shadows. "I mean armand that I have indeed been as you say, in hell or as close to hell as I could possibly get." "In hell...?" Armand began but the last ray of sunlight had sunken beyond the horizon and Armand awoke from his dream. These dreams had become more and more frequent since Louis' disapperance strange messages from afar. Armand thought carefully. Several of these dreams involved a young man, now what was his name? William? Yes that was it William. "Who is he?" Armand asked the night quietly "Who is he and what does he have to do with this?" Armand, stood staring into the Pennsylvania night, something about William Penn's legendary woods, gave him cause to shudder uncontrollably. What hat happened to Lestat, and more significantly, at least as far as Armand was concerned, what had happened to Louis? What pray tell did this small North Central Pennsylvania town have to reveal about Lestat's disappearance. Lock Haven, somehow the though made Armand far from safe. Who was this William about who he kept dreaming and what exactly did he have to do with this mess. Armand bent slightly and retrieved the paper from his pocket. He had been trying to transcribe his dreams but all that he got was a somewhat long poem that even sounded like it could have been the lyrics to some unknown song. Death is just a Second Dawn On a second Life. No barrier, No Obstacle, No Pain, No Hate, No Strife And on and on this Second Dawn calls us toward the end and end that may someday come but we no not when Yes, Death is just a Second Dawn On A Second Life, The endless Cruelty of a second knife Once signed the contracts always signed The out's a hidden clause, Mortality is not you see one of Our flaws, and those who die are not quite dead and for hell to have its affect we must be alive Oh Death is just a Second Dawn On A Second Life.... "What does this mean?" Armand cried aloud. It was certainly not the type of thing that Armand would write on his own, something more influenced then that almost guided a clue to this whole impossible situation. Armand searched again for this William and shortly found him. There the pale greenish house, right there. ______________ "Bill, I cannot possibly help you if you are avoiding my help" the voice said over the line. "Eby you never call me." William responded " And I am not exactly sure what is causing you to call now, I am intrigued, why exactly do you think that I am in trouble." William Eby, paused, the third of three William, all linked by blood, and ironically, and perhaps a little more the coincidentally, all three of them shared the fact they were the third in their family to bear that name, in addition he and Bill both shared the same middle name, Edward, the coven would have been so confused no one could think and phone calls were absurd when they were together. As a result of this and several other factors, Eby inevitably regained his old nick name which was as nick names often were in the heavily German region of Pennsylvania his last name, people also tended to call him Professor Bill, but that confused things more to the outsider, because William J. MacDonald used the nick name Dr. Bill to denote his chosen profession Psychiatry an appropriate choice give his active lunacy. Only William, who had moved to Lock Haven, a few months ago, lacked such a nick name, several attempts were made to give him one, the most humorous one being Dollar Bill, to match the Dr. and Professor Bill nick names, but it lasted a short time at best. In recent months William was called by those who knew him on the Internet by the name Fal, an abbreviated form of Falerin, but that nick name was used only by a small crowd, particularly since on many sites William changed the name. Eby brought himself back to the here an now. "Bill" he said concerned "I do not normally get these feelings and now I did and even if I have to come up to Lock Haven and physically restrain you with a few hits in the head I will do so" William, chuckled sadly. Of his third and most stable coven 6 of the original 7 members remained, Bryan , Himself, The two other Bills, Scott, and Mike, who had moved even further then he had, although ironically, with his move they again lived close. Joseph, William had sadly given up on, the darkness had swallowed him it seemed and there was nothing he could do about it, he had heard nothing from Joseph in months and the last he had heard was bad. The coven weighed heavily on William's mind lately. In his mind, he was completely alone. Joseph's departure had only upset him more, Joe had been with him the longest, he was in William's original coven, he was the first to learn about William's scarred past, and now he was gone. Thinking about it upset William even more particularly in light of what had happened with Lestat. "I am fine, Eby" William responded hollowly. "OK. Then why do you sound like your best friend died? Your mom isn't sick again is she?" "No my family is fine, I have had a lot happen is all" "I didn't tell you this because, after what happened with Dave, i did not know how you would react but I need to tell you. I called you because someone else told me to." "What does David have to do with this?" William asked. David had been a friend but through misdirection had caused William a great deal of trouble. William had never questioned anything David said and he really should have. "Megan, is the one who said I should call you." "Megan?!!!?" William asked astonished, and then he knew, Megan and Lestat had known each other, and she felt something wrong her empathic abilities functioned even at this distance. Megan and he had never gotten along they were friendly acquaintances who had openly acknowledged the fact that they both disliked much about each other. William was chaotic, but inflexible in his chaos, when something was part of his mind set he would not change it. Megan on the other hand was very ordered, very potent, but subject to change. Megan was a strong empath but if she felt William's emotion even at this distance then something more was going on.... William's thoughts were interrupted by a rap, at the door. William suddenly felt very odd as if his very soul was being touched, not just his mind. "Listen Eby, I will call you back there is someone at the door." William hung up the phone knowing he had been paying way to little attention to what was going on outside. _____________ Armand rapped on the door again, impatiently, knowing that William had been inside, not noticing however that William had become aware of him and had slid around the house from the back door. "Armand, I presume" William whispered softly, his unexpected voice startling Armand none the less. Seeing no immediate response he continued "Come quickly before my family answers your knock." Armand followed the dark haired figure into an alleyway. "Don't you fear being alone with me in this alleyway?" "No, Armand, I do not fear you for you would never stand a chance against me. You may know my name but you have no knowledge of my past" For a moment Armand felt a fury well within him that was rather unusual for him. Instead he asked clamly "What have you done with Louis' and Lestat" William turned from Armand and did not respond his sadness encompassing him far to much for him to make a sound. Armand again become irritated and with his irritation came the realization that the had not recently fed. With some alarm, William recognized Armand's thought but was again silent. Armand's fury growing far beyond characteristic proportions filling him completely blinding him, Armand snatched William to his chest taking the throat to his mouth smelling the power in William so close to the surface. It was enough to drive Armand to a frenzy, and he gave in to the dark temptation and drank, William quietly did not resist Armand at all, he seemed only slightly phased. "So it comes again" he whispered, and Armand drank in all of him until William collapsed to the ground a shell. Quickly Armand realized the mistake he had made, without William he had no information about what had happened to Louis' and Lestat. With a resolution born from the grave Armand sought to bring his wrist to his mouth so that he could puncture it, but in a flash William had risen, showing Armand a set of fangs a strong match to his own. Armand was dazed by this what was happening here. William reached for Armand and with a quick motion tore roughly into his flesh draining back what was his, the blood Armand had eagerly taken returning to him even more quickly then it had left him. Armand felt a sharp pain then as William landed a blow to his head. William said several words and Armand watched in astonishment as William's fangs receded completely before his eyes. "If you ever try that again Armand, I will more then happily tear your heart out." Armand whirled furiously, "Are you threatening me William?" "I would never dream of it Armand, but know this, and know it well if you ever cause harm towards me or those I love, you will lose you imortality very quickly and you will not return to mortality in the process." Armand considered William's words and decided that it would be wise to heed them. As much as he hated to admit it, William was more then worth of respect, he turned aside the vampires kiss as if it wer an insect bite. :The fangs though: Armand thought :Where did the come from: All of Armands immortal experience could not prepare him for the answer that William provided him with next. It came unbidden as if taken right from Armand's mind the way that the damnable Lestat would take the information. "I have been among your ranks already Armand" William said "or close to them. The process has since been negated but not fully, in times of extreme danger my former experience becomes evident." "What you are describing is impossible" "Oh come off it Armand! You have seen it yourself. Sangerphiles are as real as you are." "Sangerphiles?" Armand said questioningly "That is the term they use for themselves but they are as much vampires as you are their are two differences between the two. The first is that the sun is not a hinderance to them. The second is that they are not descendants from Akasha at all." In the dark night a voice called out, seeking to be heard, seeking anything at all, but the silent desolation that had become it's torment. On some level the knowledge that this was a new condition was present. The majority of the time, however, it seemed to last an infinite period. The voice sobbed, this is *HIS* fault and he would pay! ___________ From the moment of conception awareness exists, and at this moment all of our past lives fly out at us giving no heed to reason, nor to normality. Louis Pointe Du Lac was finding himself now in exactly such a state and it angered him. For a normal baby there would be no action that could be taken conception would continue toward birth, and at birth awareness would fade, perhaps rearing it's head in fleeting dreams. Louis was not a normal baby, his mortality was gone and thus he reasoned the process of birth should not be happening to him. In addition Louis was acutely aware of the fact that his older physical form was not destroyed but instead was being used, something which Louis could not abide. Ordinarily Louis was fairly gentle, particularly so for his kind, but in this case gentleness had no place. Louis revolted against his new mothers body revolted against it with all of his being, and the process of miscarriage began. :I apologize, mother: Louis cried longingly :But my other work is not yet done: And with that came darkness... __________ The torment that Lestat felt when he had moments of lucidity was great. During these states his fury towards William grew for he was convinced that it was some mechanism of William's design that had placed him in this hell. What hurt far worse then the eternal hunger, was those brief moments when he clearly viewed his tormentor, the man who whipped and defiled him. :Louis: Lestat cried :What have I done that makes you hate me so: ___________ "Not of Akasha?" Armand asked with wonder, and some disbelief "Then from whence do they get their powers?" "I wish I knew" William said "I only know what they claim and I can no longer give it much credit. The horrors I have seen very strongly make me doubt their claims of divine grandeur. " Armand looked away from William staring down the alleyway into the night and said nothing. William sensed a sadness from Armand, he also sensed his self-inflicted eternal torments. For unknown reasons William felt a need to comfort this man, to know him. This really did not surprise him really, the White Knight was a fitting title for him. William being a strong empath hated other people's displeasure infinitely more then his own and did his best, therefore, to eradicate it. "Armand..." William called quietly but was interrupted for at that moment there was born in his mind a thousand hornets, who buzzed for a second and then all released their, sting. :I'm Sorry: A voice came out of nowhere :but I need your form and I have no time to deal with protocol: Louis slammed his form once again and succeeded where Lestat had failed, William's mind gave in under Louis' attack and collapsed inward leaving a vehicle that Louis' could use, at least while William maintained unconsciousness. :Louis?: Armand probed startled :Is that really you?: "Louis" Armand cried again outloud "Louis it is you." Louis looked at armand through William's eyes. And saw a rather large wound on his neck. Obviously recent because Armand's vampiric nature had done nothing to close it yet. "You have been fighting?" Louis said, more of a statment then a question. "Why?" "Louis?" Armand said dumbfounded his behavior very similar to that which had enraged him about William just a few moments earlier. Something was different about Louis some how and it had nothing to do with the fact that he was in William's form. As a matter of fact William and Louis looked alike in many ways. No the difference was in his demeanor some how it was far colder then Louis normally was. Something had hardened in Louis, his experience had changed him, and Armand could not help but thinking that he seemed more like Lestat. "What is wrong with that" Louis snapped angrily "Lestat is extremly popular and extremly powerfull" "That never mattered before Louis" Armand said "And before you never would have slammed yourself into William the way you did just now" "Well, this is not before, and I am not that person any more death has changed me." "Death?" Armand said confused. "Forget that for now Armand" Louis said curtly "I asked you a question, no give me an answer." "William, he would not say what happened to you so I attacked him, but he changed into something else" "You stupid fool" Louis snapped, and slapped Armand roughly. "With out William's mortality I never could have come back and without it we shall never save Lestat" Armand reeled from Louis blow, reeled from his malice, Armand never wanted to see what could do this to Louis, never. Armand began to weep. "Oh please Armand" Louis said sarcasticly "Take your melodrama somewhere else. Go home Armand, I have no use for you and now you know where I am so you have no reason to search. Just go I am sure that if I were a mortal I would have puked by now from you sick sentimentality." Armand colapsed then Louis' words tearing through him much more then the blow. Louis' seemed exactly like Lestat to him now, and he could no handle that. Taking Louis' harsh advice armand fled into the night with no idea at all as to his destination. ___________ Louis entered William's home and changed his clothes into a gold silk shirt and dark pant's. Despite William's beard Louis' could not help but notice the resemblance between William and himself. If I do not succeed at saving myself and Lestat, Louis resolved then I shall take this form. I have to get to Schuylkil County Louis thought, the Indians called the land the Hole to hell, and in the center of it the other haven in Pennsylvania, one much more extreme that Lock Haven. William had told Lestat of Schuylkil Haven Louis' knew, it was from that general area that Megan came. Louis lifted the phone and quickly dialed a number. "Hello" came a womans voice. "Hello, Mrs Eby." Louis said " Is young Bill there?" "No, I am sorry he isn't" The voice responded. "Do you have any idea of when he will be in?" Louis asked "This is Bill?" the voiced asked recognizing William's voice. "Yes" Louis responed. "I thought that he was going up to Lock Haven to see you." "Yes" Louis replied carefully wishing for a moment that William were not unconcious "But he is not here yet I wanted to see if he had left." "He left about an hour ago" The voice responded "He should be in Lock Haven, fairly soon" "Thank you Mrs. Eby" Louis responded, eager to end this fast, William's lack of conciousness making it difficult to read anything from his mind. Looking at the clock Louis' quickly added "I apologize for calling so late" "No problem" she responded kindly "goodbye" Louis hung up the phone. Despite his diffculty reading William in this state he was certain William was not aware of Bill Eby's plans. :No Matter: Louis chuckled :I was just going to as him to come anyway: ___________ Eby arrived shortly after Louis hung up. Some what heavy set one could tell by Eby's demeanor that he was kinf and caring, willing to lebd a hand whenever possible. Louis could also see, however, that it had not always been that way. It seemed that William was not the only one with a dark past. From Eby's point of view he was not fooled for an instant, although he did not let Louis know it. He had seen William channel before and this looked a lot like one of those instances. No Eby corrected himself not quite the same, this looks almost like it used to be with Mark. Yes that's right, he looks like he is being posessed involuntarily. "We need to go for a ride" Louis said "Where?" Eby asked, although William often told Eby to drive toward some unknown destination. This was not William, and in this case he was fairly sure that the posessor had a very clear idea of where he wanted to go. "Schuylkil County" Louis responded. "Okay" Eby said slowly "But first why dont you tell me just who the fuck you are." ___________ Louis finished his story and Eby nodded. "So that is what was bothering Bill" he said "It also explains why Megan was upset. She is more then a slight fan of Lestat." "I don't think that Lestat is in New Orleans anymore" Louis said "I am certain he is in Schuylkill County. What dod you call it?" "The Hole to Hell" Eby responded. "Right. Well if this is to be resolved I have to get there and rescue Lestat I also have to rescue myself. I f I don't this will never end, and I will be stuck with William forever." "You know you could have asked" Eby said "William would have probably helped you. Instead you barage has caused a big problem, If we fail to rescue you now, who knows what will happen to William." _____________ The ride to Schuylkill Haven was quiet, with the exception of the music that Eby sung to. Louis got the impression that William ordinarily sung along to this, but Louis did not know the words. The car pulled up into a branch campus of the Penn State school system. "Ordinarily I would get the grouo together, and during the week Bryan lives here. Right now I can't Bryan is at home and Dr. Bill is working" "Where are we going?" Louis asked "A black lodge" Eby replied "it is a lot like a black node, such as the one in Lock Haven but is a lot more powerful" Eby led Louis past the campus on foot, and into a cemetary. Surely this is not a black node? It seems so benign, I feel white power here very strongly. he was about to say as much when Eby spoke. "This is a White Lodge" Eby said "There are three in all of Schuylkill County and this is the center one, most of the others are hidden you cant tell you are in one but here you can look at these tombstones, see how they are aranged in a circle. The original white coven in this county is buried there all of them were murdered. William and the rest of us have been fighting against a repetition of that for some time, but that is another story entirely." Louis strongly hoped he would not be arround for any more of that story he got the very clear impresion that whatever evil awaited him in this black lodge it was nothing compared to that which William and the coven faced. Louis shuddered they had arrived at a mausoleum. "This is the black lodge" Eby responded "unfortunately there are close to 20 of these for the 3 white ones" Eby pulled at the mausoleum door half-heartedly and much to their suprise it opened. _______ An incredible chill filled the room of darkness as Louis entered. Eby stood outside in case the authorities chose this unfortunate moment to make their rounds. THe second Louis entered a Light flare up. Louis was horrified to see his own form whipping Lestat senselessly, and Lestat's mind was silent seemingly beaten past submission. "You fool" the figure said, and Louis shuddered as it used his own voice, he though that possesors used their own voice isn't how the cinema made it. "Oh they usually do but I am destroying Lestat's soul and thus this is much more effective. You never should have come here Louis not looking like William. Lestat hates William. Some how he gets the impression that William set him up. Hmm I wonder was it something I said." The figure chuckled evilly. Louis' was infuriated by this and threw himself at the figure but reality seemed to lose his cohesiveness for a moment and suddenly he was in front of Lestat, who was awake and unchained now. "You!!!" Lestat screamed madly "It was all you" "No Lestat." Louis yelled "It was not me I am Louis" The figure using Louis form stood "I hate you Lestat, I am dead because of you. "Louis?" Lestat cried reaching for the figure who kicked him like a dog "I hate you" it said. Lestat swung and faced Louis. "You William" he said menacingly "You did this" Louis grabbed Lestat and slapped him hard a fury welling in him at Lestat and then Lestat knew, and he felt a fear like none he had known before. For the first time in as many years as Lestat remembered he felt mortal terror. This was Louis, his beloved, and he struck him, he was feeling hatred. If something existed that could do that to Louis then it was evil to be reckoned with. "Louis?" Lestat called and fell into William's arms. In that, moment of emotion William regained control. It is most likely that control that led to the next series of events. William thrust Louis' soul out and whirled arround and something happened. The darknees parted and once again the man that had started this stood before him. A sense of deja vu filled Willam as the man spoke. "He's quite right you know Lestat" a voice came from the darkness "You can't possibly use that knowledge and now it is far to late anyway. You just did me a favor though Lestat putting William through that it weakened his resolve somewhat and I have been trying to weaken his resolve that much for years." "Who are you" Lestat demanded. "But I am afraid Lestat" the figure went on "It cant make up for your ego. Look at you existence Lestat, you have not been the devil at all, you were in love and you felt pain. I feel no pain I am Asteroth lord of hell's armies and I feel no pain." This time however William was alive and he ws quite able to respond. "Asteroth? I think you have some explaining to do because if you are Asteroth you are just a two bit devil. You're are not THE devil either and my resolves is intact thank you." The figure ignored William and went on. :Claudia, sweet Claudia how you loved her Lestat: the voice came in his mind. :But she despised you so much she had to kill you, yet you would have had her live and Armand had her disposed of because she got in the way.: Lestat looked pained at this, and William spoke again. "Whatever Armand did Lestat is not your fault." Still the figure spoke. :And Louis the one you loved most he hated you too Lestat. When I showed him the sun all he could think to do was curse you, to damn you he did not regret losing his own life he only regretted that he was not taking you with him: "Louis, he dislikes me and he grows angry with me, but he would never wish that" Lestat said hesitantly. Even as the figure spoke his next words William began to laugh. :And finally David. David he loved you at first Lestat, he even wanted you to make him, he would never admit it but it was what he wanted. Then you forced it on him and he was glad. I killed David too Lestat and he died cursing you too.: "Oh really?" A voice came outloud. There stood Armand with David at his side. The demon seeing his defeat threw himself at William. "You" it screamed in a voice born only of hell "this was all you again!" Lestat grabed the deomon and tossed him aside. "Get out" Lestat said cooly "Go back to whatever place you came from" The figure stared at Lestat with distaste, knowing it had failed. "I am going Lestat but I come from another and he will give up far less easily." Lestat shivered slightly and then regained his resolve. "Go" With Lestat's words the demon vanished leaving Louis at Lestat's feet. "You struck me" Lestat told Louis astonished "Not here, my love" Louis said. "What happened?" Lestat asked William "I thought that you were dead" William responded " But he wanted you alive just as he needed Louis for alive, he wanted to break you control you. He is right though Lestat, even if he is Asteroth, which I question, he still answers to a higher chain of command." "What do you think about the Devil William?" Lestat asked. "one second. Eby I think you can go Lestat will give me a ride home" "Are you sure?" Eby asked "Positive we have some things to discuss" After Eby deove of and the other vampire departed, all except for Louis that is, William turned to Lestat "Demonology is a funny thing. I buy into two seprate principles, based on careful research. Lucifer he is the bringer of light a sort of prometheus I don't think lucifer is evil more likely God has given him the job of testing mankinds faith. Satan on the other hand is the king of demons and that is his only job to rule evil. Satan is a purely evil creature who relishes only harm. It is Satan the demons like Asteroth answer to." "I see," Lestat said "But my question has not been answered" "Oh?" William said and chuckled "Well Lestat truth be told, I think your the Devil" Lestat grinned, "I am a devil aren't I?" In the night a song could be heard. The song of which Armand dreamed a sond William was to write but had not yet writen. (The End For Now) Hello, you see I kept my promise. My story is told. Louis has recovered from the experience most readily. It is a shame really, he has so much potential, it seemed. Me, well I am fine thank you, but then what did you expect, The devil does not feel any pain. On other subjects I have been heavily following alt.books.anne-rice and I have caught some people writing stories about me that i never wanted told. For instance this whole silly spec thing. I believe it is my buisness If I am stunned by Mick;s incredible cleavage don't you. As for the rest of it I am quite impressed. So impressed i sen Mick and Suzie personal letters. It is also rumoured that William and Vanessa have gotten ahold of some papers belonging to Claudia and are planing on posting them, I hope they don edit them to terribly, although I am sure, some editing will need to be done, after all Claudia can not possibly have been as stunningly perfect a writer as I am. As for my relations with William, well I am sure we will meet again, we have some buisness to attend to, he thinks I am not totally perfect and I think otherwise. ;) thats a net.wink for those less net initiated. Well as JoAnne quoted me. I get away with ever i can believe me. Lestat de Lioncourt
