WARNING: Sexual themes and the risk of religiously offensive material! Turn back now if this upsets you! Incest lies ahead!

For Anne:
I claiom no ownership of any of these characters. They belog to Anne Rice, Knopf Publishing, and Warner Brothers Inc. The story and ideas here are mine. Catholic quotes are from the online Catholic Encyclopedia at http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/ I'm not infringing on them either.

For the rest of us:
This is what happens when I am writing a Catholicism paper and need to quickly blow off some steam. *LOL* Spoilers for TVL I suppose. Hope this comes across ok. Comments, especially happy ones, are vied for. Unhappy ones welcome as well, however. Also, I know that Confession is to be private but for the sake of argument let us assume Father Dominic took down offenses which stuck in his memory.

From the Catholic Encyclopedia:

Incest: (Latin. in, not, and castus, chaste).
"Incest is sexual intercourse between those who are related by blood or marriage ... The particular deformity of incest comes not merely from the violation of the virtue of chastity, but also from the offence against the mingled affection and reverence with which parents and, proportionately, other relatives should be regarded."

The Sacrament of Penance:
"Penance is a sacrament of the New Law instituted by Christ in which forgiveness of sins committed after baptism is granted through the priest's absolution to those who with true sorrow confess their sins and promise to satisfy for the same. It is called a "sacrament" not simply a function or ceremony, because it is an outward sign instituted by Christ to impart grace to the soul. As an outward sign it comprises the actions of the penitent in presenting himself to the priest and accusing himself of his sins, and the actions of the priest in pronouncing absolution and imposing satisfaction. 20 Avril 1769 anno domini

Journal of the Day's Confessions and Penance in the Cathedral de Lioncourt according to Father Dominic on his final day of his position.

Confession: "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. I have lusted for the company of men though I be wed. I feel discontent with life. I can not continue in this manner of coveting the lives of ruffians, but I am not all together sure if my feelings are wrong though by the Church they should be indeed."

Penance: "To go hither to thy partner and please him, finding joy in your living children and those blessings which God hath bestowed on you. For the bond of wedlock is for all time, and the souls be joined in spirit and flesh. There must be a penance through the Rosary twenty four times before sleep and thirty times upon waking. Magdeline gave up her own sinful desires for the Lord, as should you lest the sin work its way deeper."

Confession: "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. Even though I am a child and a boy, I lust for another of my own kind. This boy, his hair is like the sun and his eyes like a fine gray mist settling over the banks of the Seine."

Penance: "Strike this desire from thy heart, boy, else Satan himself shall cast thee into Hell. Thou must hold the Rosary to thy heart, praying to Mary for guidance from this blasphemy which the daemons hath allowed within your young heart. The Church shall pray for you when you no longer desire this sin."

Confession: "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. I have been bewitched by a boy of my own flesh with hair of gold and eyes of gray. I have entered into his bed and done a profane thing unto his tender body of which I am not ashamed so much as afraid. I think of no other event throughout the day, looking to the time when I shall find my pleasures in his pain by nightfall. His flesh is sweet and his mouth sweeter. I smile at his tears and laugh at his painful cries though he be my own son. Surely what I do is wrong, yet I gain more pleasure from a boy than from my own wife. Every stroke into his tiny body is like a burst of joy within my own. Worse, Father, the child was studying for the Order until I had him returned. Does this make him blessed and if so, are my actions proof that the Devil himself seeks to molest the boy through me?"

Penance: "The Church shall pray for you. There is nothing that might aide in your plight. Delight in the unsanctioned flesh is a sin in itself, but in the flesh of one's own offspring, male and unconsenting, is enough to cast thee into the very bowels of Hell before Satan's throne. Were thee not Marquis I would resurrect old ways and burn thee on the spot. Thy Rosary shall do thee no good. Thou hath damned thy child as well as thineself."
